Digital Operations: What is the book about?
Updated: Jul 16, 2021
In response to many requests for clarification, this blog will provide an overview of the Digital Operations (DigOps) model that has recently been registered and received a provisional patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The model provides an approach to help organizations strategically position themselves in our current econoly and create enterprise workflow in the Industry 4.0 economy that leverages digital products and services.
The DigOps model not only drives desired business results, but it breaks down the organizational walls and creates a system that promotes diversity and inclusion. This is key to creating a learning organization resulting in great people, customer, and societial results.
The book is divided into four parts:
Jungle Preparation - this helps organizations understand the cost of investing in the DigOps model. It isn't a monetary cost; actually, the use of this model is cheaper than relying on industry "experts." The two main costs to consider are 1. courage and 2. understanding corporate business drivers in today's economy.
Jungle Journey - takes readers through the DigOps Compass for strategic positioning in today's economy and the DigOps Workflow to support enterprise operational effectiveness and inclusion. These set the foundations of the DigOps model.
Journey Disciplines - describes and deep dives into the Key Industry 4.0 Disciplines. These disciplines are necessary to identify and build within the organization to implement the DigOps model.
Bonus Transformation Journey - highlights the programs, tools, and services available to transition organizations to the DigOps model and sustain and improve growth.
Unlike most books laden with theory, this book provides a step-by-step guide to achieving success and positioning any organization to be a market leader. Here are some of the visuals that can be used to help you survive and thrive in today's economy.
DigOps Compass - provides the strategic pathways, activities, and metrics to develop a network of strategic activities that are fit together to position any organization to compete.
As Michael Porter summarizes, “Strategic positioning attempts to achieve sustainable competitive advantage by preserving what is distinctive about a company. It means performing different activities from rivals or performing similar activities in different ways.”
The DigOps Compass provides an enterprise guide that fits together all the strategic activities necessary for achieving cultural results that enable value flow to customers. While the DigOps model explains the “why” or values needed to create an open system, the compass shows any organization the “how”.
DigOps Workflow - provides a model for how work should flow through the system from strategy to execution and value realization.
With a clear vision focused on people, customers, and societal results, the organization has a clear vision and outcomes. This clarity allows the organization to continuously deliver (flow) measurable outcomes to adjust as they learn and improve. It is a continuous workflow that includes the entire organization.
Six Key Industry 4.0 Disciplines - These are the disciplines needed to support the strategic position and workflow. Each discipline supports part of the DigOps workflow.
Every Discipline has a manifesto that outlines the philosophy and science behind it. Using a Discipline is not about following a rigid structure or process, but rather about applying the philosophy and using suggested tools and structures as business needs arise.
DigOps Programs, Tools, and Services
Finally, the Bonus chapter outlines the transformation programs and tools used to transition to the DigOps model and service offerings to help organizations sustain and improve.
What is different about this approach and other attempts to transition to new ways of working, learning, and measuring?
Three things set this approach apart:
The entire system, programs, tools, and services leverage a core set of metrics, so organizations understand which levers to pull and weaknesses and strengths to improve and compete.
We have followed our own advice and developed a fit set of activities that work together to produce a holistic result.
Following a step-by-step approach, this system will produce a learning organization that is not dependent on external experts. Instead, people in the organization are empowered to learn together.
